Paperboard (Carton Board)

The most common material for rigid or semi-rigid boxes (e.g., cereal boxes, cosmetic boxes, medicine packaging).

Solid Bleached Sulfate (SBS): Made from bleached virgin wood pulp. Features: Bright white surface, excellent for high-quality printing, strong, and food-safe. Often used for luxury or cosmetic packaging.

Clay-Coated News Back (CCNB): Made from recycled newspaper with a white clay coating. Features: Gray center, lower cost, less stiff, and suitable for simple printing. Used for cheap retail boxes or dry food (e.g., pizza boxes).

Uncoated Recycled Board (URB): Made from 100% recycled paper. Features: Natural kraft/gray color, rough texture, and eco-friendly. Used for shoeboxes or industrial packaging.

Corrugated Fiberboard (Cardboard)

Used for shipping boxes or heavy-duty packaging. It has a fluted (wavy) inner layer sandwiched between liners.

Single Face: One flat liner + one flute. Flexible, used for wrapping.

Single Wall (e.g., 200lb test): Two liners + one flute. Standard shipping box.

Double Wall: Three liners + two flutes. For heavy or industrial goods.

Flute Types: A-flute (thick, high cushion), B-flute (thin, good for printing), E-flute (very thin, for small retail boxes like pizza or smartphone boxes).

Kraft Paper

A strong, coarse paper made from chemical pulp.

Features: High tear resistance, natural brown color (can be bleached), biodegradable.

Uses: Shopping bags, inner cushioning (e.g., crumpled paper), wrapping fragile items, or creating a rustic/natural brand look.

Specialty & Coated Papers

Art Paper (Gloss/Matt Coated): Base paper coated with clay or polymer. Features: Smooth, shiny or matte finish, high color reproduction. Used for premium boxes (perfume, electronics).

Greaseproof Paper: Treated to resist oil and moisture. Uses: Food boxes (burgers, pastries) or samples.

Metallized Paper: Paper laminated with a thin layer of aluminum. Features: Shiny, metallic look. Used for cigarette packs or high-end chocolate boxes.

Rigid Paper Box Material

Unlike folding cartons, these are non-collapsible boxes (e.g., an iPhone box).

Core Material: Thick, high-density paperboard (up to 3mm thick).

Wrapper: Premium paper (art paper, textured paper, or fabric-backed paper) wrapped around the rigid board.

Use: Luxury goods, jewelry, watches, and electronics.

Summary Table

Material Best For Key Property

SBS Cosmetics, medicine Smooth, white, printable

Corrugated Shipping, heavy items Cushioning, strength

Kraft Bags, rustic packaging Tear-resistant, natural

Rigid Board Luxury boxes (phones, wine) Hard shell, premium feel

Environmental Note

Most paper packaging is recyclable. Corrugated fiberboard has the highest recycling rate. For eco-friendly packaging, look for FSC-certified (sustainable forestry) or 100% post-consumer recycled content. Avoid plastic-coated or mixed-material boxes (e.g., paper + foam), as they are harder to recycle.
